SOCIAL SECURITY SYSTEM
In Cyprus, there is a merit-based social security system that is compulsory for every worker, whether it is a dependent employment or a self-employed activity. Employed persons also include civil servants and trainees.
Voluntary insurance is only possible after a prescribed period of compulsory insurance, if the person wishes to do so or if he or she works abroad for a Cypriot employer.
The care is financed by contributions to be paid by the insured person, the employer and the state. For a dependent employee, the contribution rate is currently 21.5% of the earnings. In each case, 8.3% are taken over by the employer and employee, and 4.9% by the state (changes reserved). In the case of self-employment, a contribution rate of 21.5% of the stated probable income applies. However, 15.6% are self-employed and 4.9% by the state. Voluntarily insured persons (in Cyprus) have a contribution rate of 18.4% on their probable earnings, with 14% of the voluntary insurance payable and 4.4% being paid by the state. Voluntarily insured persons (outside Cyprus) have a contribution rate of 21.5% on their expected earnings, 16.6% of which is paid by the voluntarily insured and 4.9% by the state.
Transfer of your social security benefits
In Cyprus, since May 1, 2004, EU Regulation 1408/71 has been in force, coordinating the social security systems of the member states of the European Union, the European Economic Community and Switzerland. EU regulation 1408/71 involves the preservation and transfer of social security rights when someone moves from one Member State to another.
The following applies:
No discrimination based on nationality (same treatment).
At the same time, workers are only subject to legislation.
The benefit entitlement acquired is protected (duration of the deposit, length of employment or length of stay).
The services you have developed are protected and you can obtain them in every country in the EU.
Furthermore, Cyprus has reciprocal agreements with four other countries outside the EU Member States (Canada, Quebec, Egypt and Australia) with the aim of maintaining the social security rights of those who are reciprocal in Cyprus and those countries.
